Sometimes it just works. The restaurant we cannot remember the name of but it was between Siorac and Belves. Copper usually calls it the hotel restaurant, whatever that means, I didn’t see a hotel. The food was excellent and the grounds were spectacular, and yes it is possible to have bad food in France, but here the food was spectacular.

It is a Bourgogne called Grand Ordinaire. It’s kind of like the chicken and the egg. If it’s Grand then why is it Ordinaire? If it is Ordinaire then how is it Grand too? I swear this was 1,25E at Lidl. I think some drunken farmers harvested some crappy grapes and said let’s bottle this, call it something ridiculous, put a “French” label on it complete with a coat of arms, and see who will buy it. It probably ended up at Lidl because no one bought it. Except stupid Americans like me. It is a 2006 so how good could it be, I mean it fermented for like 10 months, I had dustbunnies older than that in my house, when I had one. House that is. Oh yeah, the wine is barely acceptable. With so many others to choose from, i wouldn’t waste my time on this one.

One of the things I’d like to write about is wine. I am by no means a wine afficionado, but a great thing about being in France is that you have a wide variety of wines for reasonable prices. Many can be had for under 5 euros. How can you go wrong? I am biased toward full bodied, full flavored, simple table wines, yes peasant stuff. It has to be good though, no vinegars. Feel free to comment on the wine or add your own.

Chateau la Foret
Bergerac 2005
Simple red table wine from the Dordogne. The first glass was strong but it softened up after it had been opened 10 minutes or so. From the bottle it says good with Charcuterie, viandes blanches, cuisine du Perigord. That narrows it down doesn’t it? I found it goes best with a glass and a head tilted back.
It cost about 3 Euros

I’ll add another one because I have been doing extensive research for this series.

Domain de la Chastelle
Cotes du Rhone 2006
Open and drink immediately, was good right from the start. The grapes are a mix of Grenache, Mourvedre, Cinsault, Syrah, and Carignan. Sounds more like punch than wine.
It cost 1,49 Euros at Lidl on promo.

I promise that when I type on an English keyboard that I will learn how to make all the accent marks correctly. I can type on a French keyboard but typing English on a French keyboard taxes my abilities, especially mid-blog-post research. hiccup!
