Bicycle Salon last Saturday in Toulouse

Bike Fair in Toulouse
On Place du Capitole in Toulouse last week there was a salon devoted to other forms of transportation. Over the course of a few days buses, subways, trams, bicycles, walking were all profiled as ways to “deplacer”.

Last Saturday I went to the salon and it was all about bicycles. There were folding bicycles, electric assist bicycles, recumbent bicycles, bicycle bag vendors selling better bags for commuting, bicycle covers like the ones you see for scooters so you can ride in the rain and stay dry, etc. There were lots of interesting booths all offering improvements to the way we commute on bicycles.

There was even a bicycle obstacle course so you could try out the different types of bikes or show off your French pedestrian avoidance skills. I have to say the pedestrians are more dangerous here in Toulouse than the car and bus drivers. Someone should make a game like “Frogger”, that old Atari game, but with bicycles and French pedestrians. Yet another project to begin, not finish, and then stess out about, so for now I will leave it as a dream.

  1. I don’t know if you saw the VP debate, but Gov Palin actually came off rather well…..if you discount the fact that she got just about everything wrong.

Yes I saw parts of it, it was surprising how well she did considering what an idiot she is. That sounds like a replay of the previous debates with Bush, surprising how well he did given he’s such an idiot, is this a harbinger!!?

I did take classes with a Jorge in Toulouse he was from Panama though. He did speak perfect English so maybe you thought he was from the US. Look at one of my posts from last February, there is a picture of a party we had at my apt and Jorge was there. Is that the one?

  5. no.it’s not him
but , thank you all the same.

  6. Hello Owen,

I was looking for the renewal of your blog in order to give you the “science fun facts” again.

I am now going back to the Google Docs you made for me.

Ps : I saw this event too and discussed with the people promoting the “ecodrive”.

I will post this story today on my blog.

  7. Hello Again :

I posted on this theme as promised :

    Semaine mobilité et Ecoconduite

It is in French but you can get an English version through Google translation

    Semaine Mobilité and Ecodriving

  8. Hey Owen,

Just stopping by to see how you guys are doing… Glad to see you are posting again!!!
Doing good here… Take good care, Leesa et Alex

  9. Hey everyone thanks for the comments, I was not sure anyone stopped by anymore, it has been a while. It is always encouraging to have readers so I will be back at it, I do not think I will post each day but 4-5 good posts a week is better than forcing myself to do it every day.

Guillaume thanks for the new science post!

Leeza and Alex, yes we are fine, how are things in Paris?

  11. I had a little wander around Toulouse a couple of weeks ago and did a hubpage on it. Didn’t have any problems with the pedestrians the cyclists or the cars but did nearly get run over by the petite train when I was looking the wrong way.

  12. Owen - so glad to see that your blog is up and running. we were in toulouse last Wednesday to meet with our bank (CA), we only spent a couple hours there and then headed home, but next time we come we’ll let you know so we can meet up. we were at Place du capitale….that was our metro stop. wish we would have been there on a saturday as we would have loved to see it.

Do you live in Toulouse? I don’t have problems witht he cars, usualy with pedestrians who try to cross the street without looking. I’m only on a bicycle but if I were a car they’d be dead. They never seem to get upset about it though, it’s like they know they didn’t look so they have right to be upset. I ride everyday to work and it happens 4-5 times each day, very strange.

    @alisa
well I’ve started blogging again but not as prolifically as my former self. I want to write less but higher quality posts about more universally interesting things.

I also want it to be almost magazine like in style, with features, sections, etc. We’ll see how far I get, even the theme is still not finished but I needed to get going again so I am doing it half finished.

When you are back in Toulouse, let us know, we can meet.
