What happened last night in Toulouse?

Yesterday when I left the gym in Toulouse there were police officers on every corner on the way home. At the same time there were many people walking about. Nothing strange about that.

I did however stop counting at 27 people, when I had counted 27 people that looked of North African descent carrying plastic toy pistols around. That was really weird.

I have never had the strange sense of violent tension in the air in France. Used to get it often in Philadelphia and sometimes in Oakland, but I have never felt it in France. Last night it hung heavy over the city. I was going to take a picture but then I thought better of it, neither the police nor the “gun guys” looked amenable to it.

Was last night toy pistol night? Why didn’t anyone tell me?

  1. Toy guns? How long before they’re real?

  2. Who knows, I wasn’t sure if it was some street theater though, it was strange, it could have been some sort of demonstration.
