I loved watching the video I posted a while back where he is asked whether or not he thinks he's too good looking. When he talked about getting through college with student loans, a huge lightbulb went on for me. The issue is not so much whether he is well off and out of touch, it is what has his life experience been? He took out student loans so he knows what it is like to live on meager means, even if he doesn't do it anymore, when he talks about what it is like for the average person, he knows because he was there. When Bush talked about the plight of the middle class families, even Clinton for that matter, you could tell he had no "authority".

PS are you guys still in France?

Obama got the nomination because, thankfully, a lot of Americans finally saw a chance to change political direction. We are tired of the same old song. We want someone who, even if he is rich and was brought up better off than most of us, has roots in the not-so-privileged quarter of society as well. I know he is not prefect (good god, a perfect politician?) but he is the best thing to happen for the US in many, many years. And I believe most Europeans feel he is the best hope for a new world order also.
