The Best Thing About Today: Day to Day Thoughts, Recollections, and a Writer’s To Do List

Michelle GonzalezThis is a Livejournal blog by an old friend Michelle Gonzalez. We knew each other when we were playing music in the Bay Area and after both of us stopped, our paths crossed again when we bought houses in the same East Oakland neighborhood. The 4 of us had wonderful times before we moved to Philadelphia and eventually to France. Hopefully our paths will cross again.

In her own words:
Not relevant to living in France at all, “The Best Thing About Today” attempts to track the inner thought process of a writer, English prof, mother, and wife, who prefers to live in the moment, but is fascinated by the way memory works – the way one memory triggers another related and often seemingly unrelated idea or memory. Topics include the author’s memories and thoughts on The Clash, birds, presidential politics, teaching and Chicanisma.

  1. Owen, I second the comments about the reader. I ‘m much enamored of this simple process and it is fun to check and see new postings all summarized neatly for us avid readers.

Speaking of, I’ve added Michelle’s blog to my reader! thanks to her and you for sharing, I’m looking forward to perusing more of her posts and her wry style.

I did tell you I’m from Oakland, right? Portland is a detour, but both kids and our décor shop are in Oakland … the bay area is my favorite place in the U.S., having travelled through much of it.

Ah well, thanks again for this great idea. I might have to plagiarize down the road … with a different theme of course so as not to be too redundant.

  2. I don’t remember hearing you are from Oakland, that is bizarre. I went to school at Berkeley and stayed for 12 years. If I ever have to move back to the US it will be to the Bay Area. Jean-Jacques and I had a gallery/home decor shop in Philadelphia that we wold just before we moved. Where is your store in Oakland and what is it called. I haven’t lived there since 2002 but if it was opened before then I probably know it. Thanks for reading, whoever said online friends aren’t as intimate as real ones? I was having a crappy day and this really made me feel connected to a past that I thought was long gone.

  3. hi Owen, me again! Our shop is Mignonne, if you google Mignonne Oakland you’ll see all about us. We have been in business 2 years. It is hard, but rewarding. I plan to continue to spend some time in the bay area as well as France. Small world is right!
