Free day for museums, 1st Sunday of each month
In Toulouse, the first Sunday of each month, admission is free. All of the national museums offer free admission in Toulouse. Most of the museums are included so it is a good day to go. Many people go so the crowds can be overwhelming so plan accordingly. If you go early there are fewer people. If a museum has something special it will be packed so go another time, unless of course you want to see that something special. Keep in mind also that sometimes special exhibitions are not free. Entrance to the museum may be free but entrance to the special exhibit might not be. We try to go each month and go to a few and not stay too long. We get to see a variety of museums and if there is something remarkable we try to go back, and *gasp* pay, if it is something we really want to spend more time viewing.
This month we plan on going to see:

Les Augustins
Housed since 1793 in the Augustinian monastery building, it offers the visitor the chance to stroll in one of the finest groups of monastic buildings from the XIVth and XVth centuries. With a collection of exhibits unique in the field of Romanesque sculptures, the museum also houses masterpieces of Southern Gothic as well as a fine selection of Renaissance and classical works from Toulouse by Bachelier, Arcis Lucas, Maillol, Rodin and Camille Claudel.Painting is well represented with a fine Italian collection including works by Perugino, Guido, Crespi, Guardi and others. French painting from the XVIIth to the XIXth centuries is represented by Champaigne, Moillon, Largillière, Vigié-Lebrun, Ingres, Delacroix, Corot and Courbet, as well as canvasses of early modern art: Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Vuillard and Manguin.
A representative selection of paintings from the Golden Ages of painting in Toulouse rounds off the tour, with works by Chalette, Tournier, Jean-Pierre and Antoine Rivalz, Jean and François de Troy, Roques, Jean-Paul Laurent and Henri Martin.
We may go to Le Musée Georges Labit which has beautiful gardens too. If the Natural history museum is free we will try to go there as well. The grounds and gardens are spectacular and in this season should be memorable. Photos to come this week.

They do that in Paris also, but I can never remember what day it is.

I’m sure it is the same in all cities here, I just don’t know if it is the same day. The first Sunday in Toulouse is also known as Un jour sans voitures so there are many people out roller blading, bicycling, and walking around. We found out there is a critical mass type group called http://www.roulezrose.com, they organize bicycle rides and roller blading journeys in the city. I think that is our next social group to join.
