Obama Speech
Well we have been out of the loop politically but we had heard about the now famous Obama speech. We also heard about the silly remarks of his former pastor. Well I don’t like either Hillary or Obama too much but I’ll vote for either one come November so it doesn’t really matter. Of course they are not left enough for me.
Here in Toulouse we went to a lecture in English about the 6 presidential races that changed American history. All of them centered around “inexperienced” candidates who turned out to be much better presidents than expected. I think Hillary is full of it and of course the reservation about Obama was lack of experience but now I am feeling much better about Obama. Here is that speech again.
I’m not sure what to think of Obama. If you go by the image he presents, then he would seem to be a very good possiblity. My gut feeling tells me that he should get my vote. Hillary, on the other hand, has shown some rather bad judgement, both in her term in Congress and in this current race for the candidacy. The one thing in her favor, as far as I am concerned, is Bill Clinton. He may not have been the best President we’ve ever had, but he had the country moving in the right direction, and I think if Hillary sought his input, she could be okay. But, on sheer gut feeling, I’d have to go with Obama. Of course, there’s nothing stopping him from seeking the advice of the former President, either. Beside being a Republican, and we all know what that stands for, McCain is an arrogant jerk who really has no understanding of foreign policy, fiscal policy or what is going on in the Middle East. If he is elected, and I’m afraid that might be the case, it may well be the end of the US as we know it.
If Hilary could just admit she didn’t make the best decisions regarding certain key points I’d be a lot happier to support her. She shows a bit of the “I am never wrong” attitude of our current President. Let’s not continue down that road.
I don’t like how prominent a role religion plays for either of them but I guess I’ll just have to accept that.
When Obama speaks, however, I get the feeling he really means it and when Hillary speaks I feel a cold sense of calculation is surging through her veins. That fake smile has to go.
I had some degree of respect for McCain when he used to criticize the failures of the Bush administration but now he is all cozy with them. I predict McCain to win against either Hillary or Obama. I am a little insulated here in France but I doubt the meltdown of the mortgage industry will be enough to cause the de hard right wingers to vote Dem. We all vote against out best interests sometimes but these people are so clueless.
We have the money to continue “the war” but we cannot bail anyone out but the banks. Hmmmmmm?
I’m just now reading this entry about the Obama speech, and I’d like to say, from the perspective of a person of color, I found myself rather relieved that somebody finally addressed the issue of race the way he did. Simply speaking about the reasons behind and the reality of the anger that is felt by so many seems to be something that so few people really understand.
I had reservations about Obama too, until I read his book Dreams From My Father.

Hi MIchelle! How is Luis Manuel? Inez?
I agree about Obama. His speech was simple and to the point without a lot of finger pointing or platitudes. It was not hard to follow and understand if you wanted to. I still wonder just how many white Americans “want to”.
