Elliott Sptizer hires a high class escort!?

I mean who cares right? Haven’t we been down this road before? Public and private lives intersecting in ways that really don’t matter. The only reason I would care would be if he were some moralistic right wing nutjob that spouted morality while acting against what he said. I don’t think that is the case. The difference between Gary Hart and Newt Gingrich was that Newt really laid it on thick about morality. It is not possible to forgive him for his “sins” while for me Gary Hart was the best chance we had at that election and made no serious morality speeches so his transgressions were entirely acceptable. Here is a sampling of the current headlines.

Here, Sarkozy has been through a divorce and has started a relationship with Carla Bruni and there has been little backlash. Not that I’m a big fan of Sarkozy but I do believe that the lack of a reaction has been quite appropriate. It is exactly what I was hoping for in our move to France. Can you imagine the President of the US, getting a divorce, starting a relationship soon after the divorce, and there not being cries for his impeachment? Not everything is great here in France but this is welcome.

BTW the above links in no way represent some exhaustive research in the matter. My mother just sent me an email about this, she still lives in NY, and I added a bunch of links so you could see what had happened. What do you think?

  1. I don’t know much about Spitzer, but he did prosecute a couple of prostitution rings while he was AG. So there’s just a bit of hypocrisy going on there.

It’s pretty depressing. I mean, you expect the republicans to do this stuff, but not the law-and-order dem. Really too bad. He has to go, imho.

  2. I didn’t realize he prosecuted prostitution rings. If that’s so then he definitely should be raked over the coals. On the other hand, isn’t that what the public expects of an Attorney General? Whether or not an AG approves or disapproves of the crimes they are expected to prosecute crime. I mean it would be just as hypocritical to have been Attorney General and not have prosecuted certain crimes if he knew about them. Because now after this they could have implicated him another way, he chose not to prosecute prostitution rings and look now he’s involved, was he receiving payments or giving preferential treatment? What did he get in return, etc.

I wonder how the coverage of this will compare to the coverage of Larry Craig.

I don’t think he has to go personally but probably it would be better since the US is heading into election season and the Dem race is so close and it is just going to have a huge negative effect. The timing is terrible.

  3. The difference between Sarkozy and Spitzer is that Sarkozy was not leading a crusade against something while committing the very violations against which he was crusading. The problem with American politicians has always been their belief that they are above the very laws they’re foisting upon the rest of us.

  4. Digging a little deeper I found Spitzer was this kind of crusader. I guess I wanted to believe he wasn’t and it wouldn’t have much of an effect on the upcoming elections. He is a pig though.
