Tecktonik - The new dance craze in France

Well I didn’t even know about it and it turns out my gym is offering a class this Saturday in this dance. I think it is a special one time class to see if members would like the class. Thanks for the tip Lost in France. Another reader, Bob, sent a link to a video of the style. I agree with you, it’s not much of a dance. I wonder if some doctor who specializes in repetitive strain injuries paid his kids to dream up this dance, all I can say is Carpal Tunnel here we come. It would probably be fun to watch, maybe I’ll even try it.

If you want to read more here is the entry for it in Wikipedia. It is in French and I couldn’t find one in English. At the bottom are some links to more info and videos. Maybe when we go out dancing one night we will see it at a club. It will probably come and go, remember voguing, the tissue dance, scarf dancing, in Philadelphia the Wu Tang, “the kids these days”.

  1. Just heard about this on tv last night. Looks like every other dance to me. Some of those guys even look like they’re doing the Hokey-Pokey.

  2. It’s too bad there is no way to represent how much I laughed when I read your comment. Somehow lmao and that’s so funny and all the rest don’t quite cut it. The hokey pokey . . .

Just today in class one of the students was talking about tecktonik. He has a Facebook group and he collects videos. I think I’ll join and try to post more videos.

We can play a fun game. What dance does this one look like he is doing? What is this one doing, but I’m not sure anyone can top the hokey pokey.

  3. That’s what it’s all about…

  4. O.K. so you want to see some real
tecktonik direct from France, like me,

here are some links on my little ol site about tecktonik dance styles, here’s 3 that are really good:

    nUNUx DaNCiiNg
    Jey-Jey
    yelle

  5. Oh yeah BTW I’m american and have been living the good life in france for the last 18 years,
I am finally bilingual, so much so I have trouble sometimes,
I find myself searching for my english vocabulary,
this can be really hilarious….. sometimes : )

p.s. I don’t know where you’re from, if your like me even after all these years I still have trouble spelling in french and also with masculine and feminin

la port …le tasse pfff…. bon peut être un jour

bon allez regarder les videos de le tecktonik
c’est pas les naz c’est du vrai

  6. Thanks for the links, the videos were great. Is that you in any of them? I would like to embed the videos in a post directly, would you mind, they are on YouTube after all? I’ll keep your links here so people can also visit your site and the other videos and I’ll put a link in the post to see more go to your site. Thanks for the heads up.

I, too, am an American. I however, have only been in France for 3 and a half months. I am not bilingual yet but I am working on it.

Unfortunately I spell horribly in both English and in French. The hardest part in French for me is typing on an English keyboard the French accents. Soon I think I will have to break down and buy a French keyboard, it will be easier.

I wouldn’t know les naz from du vrai appropos du le tecktonik but I do like your videos better.

    Bon Courage!

  7. I was amused to see Tektonik on this morning’s French equivalent of the Today Show — TéléMatin.

You really should go tomorrow to see it and hopefully you have a cell phone with a video function that will allow you to bring back your own clip for YouTube and your blog!

  8. I have that function and I have a small video camera but I also seem to have a cold as well. I may not make it.

  9. They’re good videos, but I still wouldn’t call it “dancing”. Maybe I’m just too old to get it! I mean it looks like fun, but it’s NOT dancing. Also, I noticed there were no girls involved. Is it a gay thing?

  10. I find such things inventive and amusing. It’s hard to call it a dance but it does involve a skill and it is strange that there are no girls. I doubt it is a gay thing, but it might be, let’s hope the fellow who put a link here isn’t offended by our insinuations. It does make one wonder.

  11. Come check out this guy he’s more
    of a “here’s how” and he’s good
    Lutin Sportif

  12. It’s awful it’s not even a dance… I live in France and it’s really funny to watch it… it seems that they’re having seziures

  13. i guess the more retarded you look the better the dance. i can see a lot of black eyes as a result of people smacking each other on accident lol

  14. Well I don’t think it is beautiful like ballet but it is a dance. Remember people thought modern painters like the impressionists were crappy painters because their paintings weren’t realistic. People thought Miles
Davis just made a bunch of noise. Isadora Duncan was bringing about the death of dance with this modern stuff. Now these people are revered. Even rap now, like it or hate it, has reached tremendous acceptance, even though most people thought it wouldn’t last 5 years. Mostly I think it is amusing to see and I wanted to start covering current trends in France, most of us in France have been seeing it in the news a lot lately so I thought I’d feature it.

  15. wow ))
    its very interesting article.
    Nice post.
    realy gj

    thank you ;)
