Persepolis
There is a little movie theater in Le Buisson. We went to see a French animated movie called Persepolis. It documents a young girl’s life as she leaves Teheran and her family in 1978 due to growing political unrest, goes to Austria to school, joins a band, makes friends, loses friends, joins one click, joins another click, grows up, becomes homeless, and goes back to Teheran. It was funny and sad and the animation was very simple but engaging. It even has “Eye of the Tiger” in it. See earlier post about how that song connected many parts of our lives through Oakland, Philadelphia, and a video about Toulouse.I have no idea if it is new or older or anything. I think it won the Prix de Jury at Cannes. See it if you can, let us know what you think.
Oh yeah, it was in French and no subtitles and I followed along very well. Some of the details I didn’t get but the overall story was easy. I worried about going to a movie so soon, was I going to be lost, but no. Je suis en train d’apprendre le francais.
I love when she buys a cassette tape on the black market in Teheran. They offer her Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, etc but when offered Iron Maiden she jumped at the chance. When she got home, put it in her stereo, took out the tennis racket, and played air guitar to the song, I didn’t recognize it as an Iron Maiden song. Not that I’d know that sort of thing. [/wink]
I also liked when they went to the punk music club and she seems horrified at first because it literally sounds like just on elong scream, but by the end of the night she is swaying in time to the same long scream.
