I thought our plane travel was easy but renting a car in France and driving from Paris to the Dordogne, now that could be fraught with problems. I had never driven in Europe and Jean-Jacques hasn’t driven regularly in France for years. We left the airport and got on the freeway, no traffic. We saw the first exchange and traffic was backed up so Jean-Jacques said we’ll just go closer to Paris and take the periferique. Sounds fine but if traffic was bad here it would be worse closer to Paris. Wrong! We got to the periferique and went around Paris to the south and hopped on the A10 in the direction of Orleans. We saw the first sign and I forgot it was in kilometers, I thought this was going to be longer than I thought 500km for Bordeaux, uh oh. The speed limit was 130km/hour so I quickly calculated that it wasn’t going to be so bad. Metric conversions after traveling all night, I was impressed with myself.
We continued on the A71 after Orleans in the direction of Vierzon, and got on the N20 in the direction of Chateauroux. Not north south east or west but in the direction of, like the signs. It makes sense, who cares if you are traveling east or west, where are you going. We continued on the A20 past Limoges, Brive, and exited at Souillac. It took around 5 hours but it felt like we were close. Souillac was close to Sarlat which we believed to be 30 minutes from Copper’s house. Well it took another hour and a half to two hours before we drove up to 9 Rue de la Boetie but we made it, without traffic, and without falling asleep. Oh yes, our car was wonderful, a Peugeot 407. It was roomy and Kika and Jozi were happy to be out of planes and out of their cages. It really wasn’t so bad. Our travel luck was continuing.
The Car.
