CA overturns ban on gay marriage

By Owen | May 16, 2008

I just tried to legally apply for the right to post this article on my blog, I think it works fine. Here it is. I am very jaded about such law because it feel like we have seen it all before. Is this truly historic? Other states don’t have to recognize it, other states that do recognize marriages in other states can change their laws, now Jerry Brown and the governator will have to figure out what to do, do they act like they follow the law or do they follow special interests, or do they actually jsut do what they think is right. Please tell me why this matters any more than the previous marriages in SF and all the other cities, and marriage in MA. I want it to, but I don’t feel it.

California’s top court legalizes gay marriage
By LISA LEFF
Associated Press Writer

California’s Supreme Court declared that gay couples in the nation’s most populous state can marry — a monumental but perhaps short-lived victory for the gay rights movement Thursday that was greeted with tears, hugs, kisses and at least one instant proposal of matrimony.

Same-sex couples could tie the knot in as little as a month. But the window could close soon after — religious and social conservatives are pressing to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot in November that would undo the Supreme Court ruling and ban gay marriage. Continue Reading >>

Absolutely insane amount of snow and sleet falls in Toulouse today.

By Owen | May 15, 2008

Check out this photo gallery. Tonight, a large amount of snow and sleet fell. I have 3 news channels on and I am trying to beat them to the coverage. Look at all this snow. It was such a nice day today, what happened?

Bicycling to work along the Canal du Midi

By Owen | May 14, 2008

The canal just outside of the center of ToulouseI haven’t been working very much lately. There have been a slew of French holidays coinciding with the days my class falls on. School holiday, May Day, also an article on Hub Pages, Victory Day, etc. Today I went to work for the first time in 3 weeks, no I don’t get paid when I don’t work so spare me the lucky you stories. My life in France has had its ups and downs. Some things have been a pretty easy adjustment for me and some things have been hard. Today was beautiful riding along the Canal. The trees were fully leaved, some in bloom, lots of people were out walking and riding their bicycles, and it was warm but not hot. When I feel a little sorry for myself I should remind myself of a few things, mainly, not everyone gets to ride their bicycle to work along a UNESCO World Heritage site. Really, the Canal du Midi is about 2 blocks from our apartment and then it is about 5 blocks from the building where my classes are. Basically the whole way to work. Not too bad.

Obama event at Viaduc de Millau

By Owen | May 13, 2008

Here are some photos. It was an interesting day and we met many Americans of the type we like. We don’t usually go to expat things because we usually find them annoying but this group was nice.

Here is a link to a Flickr slideshow the organizer put together.

Here is a link to a Hub Pages article I wrote about it.

Le Viaduc de Millau is really spectacular though, go if you get the chance.

Bob Spencer: Le Rêve Francais

By Owen | May 12, 2008

A regular reader and commenter Bob Spencer. In his own words . . .

A francophile who occasionally gets to live le Rêve Français. Although like most dreams, sometimes the reality isn’t quite the stuff of which dreams are made.
